Beatrix Potter, Part One

Summertime seems to be the perfect time for me to study the life of someone I really admire. I like to think of it as continued learning, or home school for post-college lifelong learners. :) Last summer, it was Dietrich Bonhoeffer. The summer before that was probably Jane Austen. This summer, I am looking at the life of one of my favorite authors and illustrators, Beatrix Potter.

I'm reading a biography by Linda Lear, watching a favorite movie, and will soon begin a new mystery series inspired by Beatrix Potter and her life at beloved Hilltop Farm (by Susan Wittig Albert).

And of course, I'm reading my much loved copy of the Tailor of Gloucester.

I just love my little girl cursive inside the cover!

I was inspired by Beatrix to take the watercolors outdoors and observe nature.

Sam decided to draw a character from Minecraft. Not exactly nature, but if it inspires him, then I'm okay with that.

Big brother, Luke, joined us for our impromptu art school.

When the sun came out, the "artist" needed a little shade for painting "en plein air".

Luke always was a talented artist. I love his Boba Fett drawing!

The boys had a great time mixing watercolor paints and blending to get desired effects. The results are so much different than colored pencils and markers.

Are we proud of our work? I think so!

Tomorrow, I will show you my art project, and maybe even a card if I am so inspired!

Happy Friday, friends!

  1. I would know your handwriting anywhere...your big girl cursive looks just like your signature today...so sweet.

  2. I came across a used copy of the first book in the Beatrix Potter mystery books. I really enjoyed it. I bought the second book and have it waiting at the cottage for me to enjoy next week. I hope that you enjoy it as much as I did!
