To Pin or Not To Pin

Do you pin? As in, Pinterest? I am torn on this new form of social media mixed with eye candy. I can see where Pinterest might occasionally be nice, especially if you are using it as a form of online inspiration board. Where Pinterest and I part is pure esthetics. I love pretty things as much as the next gal. Heck, that's why I love magazines so much. But I also like to keep my life real. Pinterest holds an unusually high standard to the rest of the world with its pretty fluffy messages, pretty hair, pretty houses, and pretty handmade everything. But is it real and true and good?

Here's an example. Pinterest will show you a unique way to decorate your home using stamps.

What it won't show you is what a mess rubber stamps will make in the rest of your house( if you get really serious about collecting them! tee! hee!).

Pinterest will show you a carefully cropped and beautiful photo of roses.

It won't show you the morning table where those roses reside, cluttered with newspapers, homework, unfinished weekly bible study, pencils, pens, scissors, and a game of Bananagrams.

Pinterest might show you a nice new sofa, artfully arranged with pillows and blankets.

But it won't show you that it's taking up valuable real estate in a room that is currently occupied by four couches!

Let's face it. Life is messy! And while I might occasionally need a pretty photo or a feel good message to inspire me, I also do not need to see a young woman in an impossibly small bikini with perfectly braided hair who lives in a just so house filled with the best of everything. I have enough inferiority complexes to battle every day without Pinterest helping the devil's hand, thank you very much!

Will I pin? Maybe. But I have to remember to "keep it real" every day. Easy to do here at home, not so easy to do when bombarded by television and the internet.

But here I am, on the internet, showing you my pretty thing, making myself a part of the problem instead of the solution. What can I say? I'm a complex, flawed individual. Good thing God loves me so much!

Papertrey Ink now has a Pinterest gallery to browse, and it is inspiring, I'll give you that! One project inspired me to use strips of pretty papers for this bookmark that I made for Sam. A mother just loves to hear "As soon as I finish this chapter"!

Tell me, do you pin? What are your favorite inspirational blogs?

  1. Wow - what a great post. When I became a christian many, many years ago, one of the first things I did was cancel my subscription to Better homes and Gardens. I found the magazine made me covet and I realized there were lots of media images that were tempting me to not be happy with what I have and want something else. I do 'pin' but not very much. I've had an account since Thanksgiving and i only look at it once a month or so. It's also a huge time waster so I proceed with great caution. I agree we need to keep it real. These images are not always the reality.

  2. Oh, you have a REAL house! It's very difficult for me as I live in a tiny, one bedroomed cottage, and can't really fit much more in! If I didn't make cards I'd probably have plenty of room... It is depressing sometimes looking at wonderful pictures, then looking at the dog hair, the piles of laundry etc in your own home. And by the time I've finished seeing to my horse, made a card and done the housework, I don't think I have time for another computer related activity, and I'm bored with facebook!

  3. Oh, this is so, so, so true ;-) The one thing I remember from Physics is, "All things tend towards disorder." How true is that? So, Pinterest is fighting physics! HaHa! It is fun to surf Pinterest, but one can end up living life on one's bum, looking at the computer instead of living life (or cleaning one's house ;)in my case. So, it's like anything we do or encounter....BALANCE-once the balance tips to far either way things start to go wrong. KEEP IT BALANCED!

  4. lol- Mary Rose, you crack me up. Let me explain my thought process here (You know how scary that can be!). I was reading along, but stopped at the picture of the beautiful roses (from Ed?). I'm thinking, I know that placemat. Did Mary take a picture of these at Jenny's house? When? That Rudy is just so sweet. Then I went on reading. And the next picture helped my view to broaden. Oh Mary, I love the picture of the 4 couches. You KNOW that is my life. Your whole post made me laugh and think. God is sometimes like the cameraman. Sometimes he wants us to see the big picture, and he pulls back to give a full view. Other times, he wants us to see the smallest detail in front of us -the beautiful flowers and mat. What a lovely reminder. Thanks x

  5. I thought that was my table too...better get busy on Rudy for the roses. Haven't been on Pinterest...think I will stay away. In my opinion the table filled with life is much more interesting than the "artificial" staged look. Then again, I am a fan of close-ups for details you might otherwise miss...fickle aren't we?!

  6. I love your post! It's all about "scale" isn't it. Pinterest is a tiny world, like "card-land." A lovely, little escape to use when we need to clear our minds and eyes of the busyness of the world. But reality is not always visual, it's what you hold in your heart--your relationship with God, family, and others. If that means 4 couches in the room so everyone can gather together, and a messy desk from being creative, I'm all for it.
