A Better Way To Boil An Egg

I discovered a better way to boil an egg.

I know. This shouldn't be rocket science, right? I mean, I am 52 years old, and I've boiled my fair share of eggs. And maybe my past methods were not "wrong" per se. They just didn't produce the best results.

Sure. I could make a hard boiled egg. But getting the shell off? That was another story!

I would gently tap and crack at the bottom, trying my best to get a good section of shell. But they would crumble and cling to the egg, and I'd end up with something that looked less than appetizing.

So after searching Pinterest, I found a new method to try.

This is the boiling water method, as opposed to the cold water method. See, I used to fill a pot with cold water, put in the eggs, bring to a boil, and set the timer.

But not with this method.

Instead, you first bring water to a boil.

Then, gently, using a tool like the spider ladle here, you gently place the egg in boiling water.

Then, turn the heat down to a simmer and set the timer for thirteen minutes.

When the timer goes off, remove the eggs and place immediately into a bowl of ice water.

Leave them here for a few minutes to stop the cooking process, then dry with a towel.

To peel, I tap the bottom to crack, and peel gently, making sure to get under the membrane and peel away.

I promise, the shell comes off easily every time...even the next day.

I'm telling you this now, before you decide to make some colored eggs next weekend for Easter. I have used hen's eggs in the past, but I find I am getting better results with the plain white from Eggland's Best.

And speaking of eggs, did you see the cute wooden eggs at the Target dollar spot? You could get a four pack of just blue, a four pack of plain wood, or a four pack of pastels. So sweet! I knew I could use these in my home decor.

Now go forth and get boiling! Easter's coming, cafe friends!

  1. Hmm I put eggs in cold water, bring to a boil, cover with tight lid and turn off the heat. Set timer for 13 minutes, put hot eggs in icy water, and easy peel without the blue-green tinge around the yolk too. Oops! Yesterday on my all-day trip 60 miles from home, I ran out of energy for Target, my bad.

  2. This made me smile...as just a few weeks ago I was celebrating that I could finally boil an egg without getting the gray color around the yolk, along with being able to successfully peel it without decimating most of the egg white, and I am *a few* years older than you! Love those little Target eggs! Enabler! :) M.L.

  3. Hi Mary Rose .... just wanted to let you know that I've tried your egg boiling recipe three separate times and it has worked BEAUTIFULLY each time! I'm a senior citizen and I'm not too old to learn a new trick! LOL! Thank you for sharing this idea! Hope you had a blessed Easter!
