The Sad Tale of My LG Washer

Mondays are typically the day I wash the sheets and towels. I began a load first thing yesterday morning, and instead of the happy little LG tune that my washing machine sings at the beginning of its cycle, I heard a "clunk clunk clunk clunk clunk clunk" and then saw the error message "DL".

Huh?

I tried again. Same thing.

So after getting the D.L on "DL" error code messages, I found (thanks to the internet) that DL is for Door Lock, and that the mechanism was not functioning. I tried unsuccessfully to reboot the system (a.k.a. unplugging it and plugging it back in again several times). Finally, I gave up and called the service department, who informed me that they will send out a repair man on Thursday. Thursday! That's a lot of dirty laundry!

Of course, Sam had informed me before he left for school "Oh yeah, I forgot to tell you this weekend. I have a ton of dirty laundry in my room."

Note to self: time to teach Sam how to wash his own clothes!

Did I mention that my LG washer and dryer are just one year old? And of course, they are three months past the warranty.

😡

So I went to the local laundromat with Luke last night, just to do some emergency triage on Sam's clothes for the week ahead.

Four loads and $12 later, I had two big baskets of wet clothes to take home and throw in the dryer (because everyone knows that the dryer is even more costly than the washer!). Wow. Laundromats are so expensive! That's why I let my adult son come home to do his laundry here once a week.

As far as laundromats go, this one was pretty nice. And look! They had some quality reading material for the patrons, too!

There was good news at the end of this sad tale of woe. The laundromat in Saline is located right next door to Mickey's Ice Cream stand! Luke treated me to a turtle sundae, and it was delicious.

Ed says that even though our washer and dryer are only a year old, they have to work twice as hard because I am continually running them. He exaggerates, of course. I do love to keep up with the laundry, though.

If I could get in my time machine and turn back the clock to January 2018, I would tell my younger self "Don't get that fancy top-of-the-line washer and dryer with all the computer sensors and new technology. Get a basic Speed Queen with three dials and call it a day!"

I'll be washing more clothes in a Speed Queen later today, and paying $3 a load for the privilege.

Sigh!

The sun is shining, birds are singing, and spring is here. Washers will get fixed, and clothes will get clean, and sometimes bumps in the road get rewarded with ice cream.

This is the day that the Lord has made. I will rejoice and be glad in it!

  1. I feel for you! We just replaced our 20-year-old washer. I loved it. The new one is fine, but I doubt it will last 20 years.

  2. Oh, how I dread the day I must get a new washer! Ours is 21 years old and the only one I have owned so far (we bought it when we got married at 23). I began researching machines a year ago and determined that I would buy a front loading Speed Queen with no bells and whistles when the time came - less of that means less to potentially break. If only I could buy a simple car lol!

You are so right, though, about these being small bumps in the road. It is life and it is what emergency funds are for lol! Rejoicing in the day the Lord has made, too!

  3. I purchased a Speed Queen top loader, and I love it. The front loader machine I had previously did not use enough water. Clothes were not coming clean. Regardless of how I cleaned the machine, it smelled like mold, most likely because the water did not drain out fully. I have never, ever had that problem with my top loader, clothes are clean, and I will never go back to a front loader! My Speed Queen is a workhorse! M.L.

    1. I thought of you at the laundromat, M.L.! When I was loading clothes into the Speed Queen, I said to myself “ I should have listened to MaryLynn!” 😊
