I popped in to my local resale shop to check out the book section recently. Books are so expensive, aren't they? As a writer myself, I do appreciate that those authors get paid adequately. But man oh man, when you see a book for $20 one day, and a few months later it's at the Goodwill for $1, you have to wonder what the markup is! That is why I very rarely buy books new.
I always check on fiction titles for my Moms, classic lit titles for my son, and anything that catches my eye. Summer is coming, and I like to have a stack of books for summer reading, too.
These slightly tattered and faded books were calling my name. And when I picked one up and saw what it was, I knew I had to bring them home. Vintage Laura Ingalls Wilder books, with illustrations by Garth Williams.
And here's the sweetest part: they were old library books, with the cards still inside!
Precious!
I think this may be a Laura Ingalls Wilder summer. I plan on reading these titles, and doing a little research along the way. Little House on the Prairie was a big part of my childhood. My Mom even sewed me "Laura" dresses so that I could "play" little house. Good memories. Simple times.
Do you have a summer reading list yet? I'm putting mine together this week.
Blessings on your Monday, café friend!
Oh what sweet memories! I remember reading ALL of these, and when my daughter was born, I immediately sent away for the whole series. (I had to wait to see if I had a boy or a girl!) Sadly, she was not as avid a reader as I was, so I re-read them myself! And I still have them! I need some summer reading, so I guess I'll have to stock up next trip to the library!
ReplyDeleteMaybe we should start a Laura Ingalls Wilder book club this summer! :)
DeleteThese look like the books I read when I was young. You really scored! You might be interested in reading Pioneer Girl: The Annotated Autobiography. I was able to get it from the library. It's a very detailed book, huge and heavy; but, it's very interesting. Lots of vintage photos, too.
ReplyDeleteSusie, you won't believe this, but I just bought that book this weekend! I found it at my library's used book room for $10, which seemed like a good deal. It was in brand new condition, and not a bad price considering it was originally $40. Looks like a great resource!
DeleteWow! You scored again!
DeleteI have these exact same editions! I, too, played Little House (my pioneer girl dress came from a thrift store and my mom bought me a hand-sewn bonnet at a craft fair). Love, love, love these books. Can you believe, though, that out of 3 daughters I could convince NONE of them to read this series? Or Anne of Green Gables? So many times at the dinner table I'd say, "Ma Ingalls always said..." or "Pa always said..." and they'd groan lol.
