Finding Beauty in Nature

There is so much beauty in this wonderful world that God created, but sometimes we miss it.

I stepped out on the deck at just the right moment yesterday, when the sun was at just the right angle to illuminate this spider web in a kaleidoscope of color. Stunning! A work of art!

I try to live a slow life that pauses and examines.

The swallowtail caterpillar eating fennel in my garden.

The monarch flitting from blossom to blossom.

The young buck with fuzzy antlers.

This squirrel napping on the deck railing.

Peppers dangling from the plant.

This beautiful pink brandywine tomato, fresh from the garden.

Sometimes, people get so wrapped up in the bad that they become blind to the good. They'd rather see the negative and the ugly than the positive and the beautiful right before their eyes. They don't live in peace, but choose to dwell in conflict.

I hope that I can always see the good. One day, I will get to heaven and tell the Lord of Creation "Thank you for that funny squirrel, and those butterflies and caterpillars, and that spider's web. They made me smile!"

"Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me- practice these things, and the peace of God will be with you."  Philippians 4: 8-9

  1. This post has to be one of my favorites you've written! First, the napping squirrel is 100% a smile maker! Absolutely adorable! Second, I'm with you on living a slow life. Twice a week since he's been in kindergarten (he's now in 4th grade), I've walked the neighbor boy to the bus stop so his mom can leave for work. The other 3 days he is driven to and from the bus stop by someone else. He told he loves our walks to the bus stop because "I can see everything, Mrs. Steele, and you don't walk fast." Third, years ago I made an entire scrapbook around that verse. It was a year where I was feeling pretty low and so I used the scrapbook to create layouts that forced me to think on "whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable", etc. Your pretty pictures of nature are lovely!
