An Invitation (And A New Print!)

Our son, Samuel, will be confirmed in the faith next month. Confirmation is a big deal in our church, as it should be. It's a big step on his journey of faith. Next week, he will give his faith statement to the congregation. Then, at the end of the month, he will have a rehearsal dinner followed by questioning with the church elders.

I've been working on invitations to send out to friends and family. I knew that I wanted to use Luther's Rose as the image, but struggled with how to convey that in print form. It was tough, considering that you are only working in black and white, light and shadow.

My first attempt came out looking more like a hibiscus than a rose. Pretty, and I loved the rustic simplicity of it. But still not exactly what I had in mind.

I then tried a smaller version, concentrating on the positive and negative spaces. After a few attempts, prints, and re-carves, I think I got it as close to the image I had in mind as possible. The rubber that I was carving was turning out a little crumbly for some reason, and I had a harder time getting clean cuts. This kind of detailed work is probably better suited for lino tiles than rubber.

The good news is that Sam liked it, and that made me happy.

I printed the invitation on a cheap. lightweight card stock, then cut it to size, made the prints, and let them dry overnight.

Today, I mounted them to heavier card stock from Papertrey Ink. Simple.

I think one of the aspects that I love about this medium is that it is very tactile from start to finish. Also, it has a primitive, old world quality that embraces the imperfections.

Now to get the envelopes addressed and put these in the mail A project done. Yay!

Blessings, cafe friends!
