Master Bath Update at The Cottage

I bet you thought we were done updating the cottage.

Ha! Is anyone ever done working on a house?

I've always said that the house gets finished ten minutes before the For Sale sign goes up in the front yard. LOL! But as you know, I have no future plans for moving any time soon. This time around, I am making the improvements for myself, without worrying about what a future buyer will want in the house.

The master bath needed a lot of help. For starters, it is tiny. One sink, smallish shower, and a small linen closet.  That might be a deal breaker for some people, but we have lived in houses that did not even have a master bath ensuite. We can deal with small.

What I could not deal with were the terrible walls that had been badly patched and not even painted over, along with sloppy painting that got onto the ceiling. It looked bad.

I decided to go with Benjamin Moore Wythe Blue for a simple reason...we had more than a half gallon leftover from the kitchen! And because I had chosen a pearl finish for the kitchen walls, I was fairly certain this finish would work in a bathroom as well.

Here it is:

I chose the oil rubbed bronze finish for the new fixtures. We have used a lot of it in other areas of the house, and I think it's a nice look for a cottage style.

New light fixture to replace the modern-ish Jetson's style fixture that was here previously.

New towel bars and rings.

We swapped out the bizarre southwestern-inspired swirly knobs for a more traditional knob on the cabinet door and drawers.

We even swapped out the door knob, and installed a nice Command strip hook for bath robes.

I found some accessories on clearance at Target that worked well, too.

Of course, one of the biggest improvements to this space was the Velux sun tunnel that we had installed last fall. It brings in so much natural light! I think it has to save us money on the electric bills, as we only need to turn a light on at night.

I had the sunflower painting in storage, so I pulled it out and hung it in here. I think it makes a nice addition! I originally bought this painting (along with it's mate) from The Country Door catalog when we were staging our house in Indiana...spring of 2013? I like to hang on to a few home decor items because you never know when and where you might need them.

So there it is...a bathroom update on a budget. If the budget were much bigger, I would gut the shower, put in all new tile and and oil rubbed bronze glass surround, new floors, new cabinetry, new mirror. But for now, this room is clean and fresh, everything is in working order, and the pretty blue makes me happy. $100 well spent.

Blessings, cafe friends!

  1. What a difference! Oil rubbed bronze finishes are our favorites, too, and we have them in our bathroom and kitchen. I love the paint color!
