DIY Masking Stencils
Have you seen the masking stencils that Laurie Willison created for Taylored Expressions? Genius.
And I really wanted to order them, too.
But when they came out in October, they quickly sold out. By the time they were back in stock, I was on my self-imposed crafting budget and could not afford them.
Drat.
What's a cheap girl to do? Make her own masking stencils!
I went to Hobby Lobby and found these stencil sheets for $2.99. You can find them in the craft painting/stenciling aisle.
I cut them to size (maybe 6 inches for each?). Using my MISTI to help with placement, I used Lawn Fawn stitched frame dies and taped them in place. Then, I ran them through my Big Shot a few times, and voila!
I now have circles, squares, rectangles, and ovals for masking.
I used this stencil from Simple Stories, and with the help of Pixie Spray, some TE blender brushes, and Distress Oxides, I was able to create this no-layers card!
{Today's Brew: Bloomin' Cute Thanks die (PTI), MFT snowflake die, Simple Stories stencil, enamel dot, Distress Oxides}
So just to recap, I made all of those masking stencils for $3. Not bad!
Would I purchase the Taylored Expressions masking stencils? Absolutely! TE always makes great quality products, and I think Laurie is a great designer and I'd want to support her future products! But I'm pretty happy with my alternative.
Thanks for visiting the cafe today!

Great idea, Mary Rose! You're very resourceful.
ReplyDeleteI'm with you on improvising. Cover plate dies make good stencils too. Thanks for the tips.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea, Vikki! I have a few that I need to try this with!
