COVID-19 Plan: Paint the Basement!

When I heard that my husband would be on furlough for two months, my first thought was "Hey! Great time to paint the basement!" Painting keeps Ed busy and his mind occupied, and it makes my house pretty. Win Win!

The basement color was not offensive. It's just that the walls were in terrible shape. Nicks and marks everywhere.

And flat paint, which shows every imperfection.

Time for a refresh! I decided to continue with the Manchester Tan from Benjamin Moore that we have used in the common areas of the house, like the hallway and stairwell.

It's a nice, light neutral that is very soothing.

The biggest difference? The ceiling! Oh my word! The old paint (upper left in photo below) looks yellow compared to a fresh coat of white! That is going to reflect so much light into an otherwise dark basement!

So here you can see the old wall color. It was a tan with a slightly yellowish greenish undertone.

And now, here is the new color:

And because the basement is a large space, we've decided to paint it in sections, from top to bottom, and then move on to the next section. For now, the landing/foyer area of the basement is complete, and we will move on to the hall leading to storage, then the movie/seating area, and then the kitchen.

The basement bathroom and Sam's bedroom will need painting, too. Once those rooms are complete, we will have painted nearly every space in this house.

Another big improvement? The trim! The fresh white does such a nice job of highlighting the new color. So clean!

The weather has gotten cold again. It's a good time to work on indoor projects before warm weather (and biking season!) arrives. I always tease my husband that if this retail career thing doesn't pan out, he can always become a house painter! 😀

Are you working on any house projects during this Stay in Place season? My oldest son works for a home improvement store, and he said their business has been pretty busy.

Stay healthy, cafe friends!

  1. No home improvement projects here. I'm really not into gardening or home improvement stuff so I just don't do them! I'm your pretty typical absent-minded bookworm that could read books and stamp all day while the world falls apart around her and she never notices. My husband is working harder than ever (with half his team furloughed he had to pick up their work in addition to his own), so he does not have time for home improvement stuff. Fortunately, everything is in good shape around here! I love seeing your gardening and home improvement and decorating ideas, though!! You have such a gift!
