Using What You've Got Challenge: Making Abstract Art

Have you noticed that abstract art has been a design trend this year? Amorphous blobs and geometric shapes have been appearing on card fronts to highlight stamped images.

And I kind of like it. But I wasn't sure if I was "sold" on this being my style, per se.  There are some really lovely products being sold by many companies...Taylored Expressions, Catherine Pooler, Essentials by Ellen. Stencils, stamps, die cuts. And when I added it all up, it came to somewhere between $50-$85 to get "the look".

That's when I started thinking...hey, it's abstract art! Can't I create that on my own?

The answer is yes! And you can, too!

I had some leftover sheets of stencil plastic from another project. Using a Sharpie, I drew some shapes onto the plastic.

Next, I used the pokie tool to make a hole right along the drawn line. This allowed me to get my scissors in to careful cut a smooth line all the way around the image.

I used Pixie Spray on the back of the stencil to help it stick to the card stock, and then I used Distress Oxide inks for ink blending. I started with one stencil, blended, took it off, overlapped with another stencil, and repeated.

Then, I used a stamp set from Catherine Pooler (A Little Birdie) to add some branches in black ink.

I stamped and die cut a bird and a banner, added some sequins, and done!

This project hardly took any time at all, and now I have stencils to use for future projects!

Now for some crafters, this might be more work than they are willing to put in, and they are happy to pay for the kits designed by stamp companies. And I fully support that! The companies really do come up with some fantastic and inspiring art and projects, and I don't want to take away from that.

Today, I am happy to report that this Use What You've Got Challenge was accomplished!
