It's officially chilly here...chilly enough that we had to turn the furnace on for the first time this morning. Temps are not going to get beyond the mid 50s today. Sweater Weather is here!
It is also candle burning season!
I thought I'd pass along some info that I learned about candle production this year. An industry insider said that there is a practice in some candle manufacturers called "topping". What that means is that they put the majority of the concentration of the fragrance at the top of the candle, so that when you open it to smell it (and first burn it) it really has a strong scent throw. But what happens is that they cheap out with the fragrance at the bottom, and over time you can barely smell it anymore.
I found this to be true of the candles I bought from Aldi. I was so excited when I first discovered them. Great soy candles with nice scents, and only around $4 a jar. But unfortunately, they just didn't have the scent throw that I was hoping for.
I have since gone back to burning the soy candles (Threshold and Opalhouse) from Target. They always have wonderful scents this time of year. Some of my favorites: Autumn Harvest, Cider and Oak, Bourbon Pumpkin, Heritage Pumpkin, Cozy Nights, Fall Day, Orchard Cider. I can even smell them when I am not burning them! They run $10/jar for the large two-wick, but you can sometimes snag them on a sale.
Do you have a favorite candle or candle making company? I also like the candles from White Barn Candle Company (Bath and Body Works). I prefer soy candles over petroleum-based candles...they just burn cleaner and don't have that gassy smell to them.
Have a cozy day, café friends!
