The Height of Hydrangea Season

The hydrangeas are in their full showoff stage now. So many pretty varieties!

I only have two varieties currently blooming in my garden. This one is called Let's Dance Moonlight hydrangea. It starts out as a vibrant pink and then fades to a dusty, vintage mauve.

And then there are my old standbys, the Annabelle hydrangeas. I pruned these way back this spring, but they came back bigger than ever.

I wish I had more varieties, like Oakleaf, but there's only so much room in the garden.

It's a good time to cut them for preserving. The vibrant chartreuse color makes a lovely addition to Christmas foliage.

I tried preserving the blossoms in a different way. In watercolor!

If you've ever wanted to watercolor, here's my best tip.

Just do it.

There. It's that simple!

Seriously.

You could invest in classes, watch Youtube videos, or buy books. But in the end, you just have to play with it and see what happens.

Initially, I invested in some paints that I really love as well as some brushes that work well, both from Prima. I use a variety of cheap watercolor papers that I usually find at Walmart, like Canson. I use a mechanical pencil to draw a quick sketch, find the right colors for the project, and then just jump in.

My husband looked at this one and said "Wow! You've really got talent!"

Not so. I just got brave enough to do it.

More flowers and birds to come, and then it will be trees and leaves and pumpkins.
