Roundabouts seem to be going in everywhere. They are installing a lot of them in Michigan, and don't even get me started about Indiana, where Carmel is the roundabout capitol of the world.
I'm burying the lead here, as the journalists say.
My husband was out riding his bike yesterday and was hit by a car in a roundabout. Yikes! He had the right of way, as he was the first to enter the roundabout. The driver of the car either didn't see him or didn't obey the rule that the first one to enter the roundabout has the right of way. The bike took the brunt of the hit, and impact knocked him to the pavement. Police and ambulance were called after witnesses stopped (bless them!). The driver was cited, and I do feel bad for her, too, as she was probably pretty shaken by the incident.
My husband has a Garmin device that lets me know where he is and if any incidents take place, and it notified me right away. Luckily, he was only 5 miles down the road and I was able to get him and take him to urgent care to get checked. Nothing broken, but he has some serious road rash and will no doubt have some big bruises and aches and pains.

He'll have to get new prescription sunglasses (they broke) and his bike's rim needs to be fixed, but other than that he's okay. I think a new helmet is in order, too. So thankful, as it could have been so much worse.

So, so glad your husband is ok, Mary Rose!!! Wow, yes, everyone keep those eyes open and stay alert while driving.
ReplyDeleteI stupidly crossed a street on my bike behind a car stopped at a red light (the car stopped far out in the road, covering the crosswalk, and I so I went behind the car to cross without being in the intersection). Well, the driver realized she was too far in the intersection and backed up just as I was riding behind her. She clipped my rear tire, causing the bike to fall over with me still on it and trapped by the curb. Pedestrians yelled at her to stop. She did and was so upset. Fortunately, just my bike was damaged and not a scratch on me, but it was terrifying to think I could have ended up crushed under her car tire!!
I am not accusing your husband at all with this next bit as I'm sure he follows road rules with all his years of experience and miles of riding.....bikers have a responsibility to follow road rules themselves. I use my bike as transportation and I see SOOOO many bikers (electric and manual) fly through stop signs and red lights, several nearly getting hit by drivers who had the right of way. Please, everyone, follow the rules of the road, whether on bike, foot, or in a car!!!!
