A Rustic Cottage Redo for the Guest Room

The guest room was in need of a serious refresh.

Back when we lived in Illinois, we had two twin beds in our guest room, and I decked them both out in salmon (okay, it was kinda pinkish coral) colored buffalo check bedding from IKEA. It was so cute, especially for all of the women in my life who would come to visit.

After moving back home to Michigan (thank you, God!), I realized that the women were not staying in the guest room as often. It seemed to be the place where my adult sons would end up spending the night on their visits. And honestly, they were tired of the pink bedding. Who can blame them?

I started searching for a new duvet cover, and found this one online. It was from Eddie Bauer Home, purchased through Macys.com. I wanted something that would bring some light into this north facing room, while also coordinating with some of the reds and greens in this space. You know how computer monitors can be deceptive when it comes to color? I was pretty sure I saw a green stripe in this plaid.

And I was right! I love the colors!

I incorporated some red and rustic elements in the decor by shopping my stash.

I moved this mirror over the dresser, hoping it would help to bounce a little light from the window into this room. The tole trays were hung with Command strips. Simple!

I really wanted something decorative that was white and wood and chippy. And then I remembered my door panel! Perfect!

We have a few vintage duck decoys from my Father-in-Law. I love them! I think they work great in this room!

The birch trees really add to the rustic in here, too.

The dresser and chest of drawers were originally from the master bedroom. I've had them since I was a child, and they are in really good condition. When we got new furniture for the master bedroom last winter, we decided to eliminate one of the twin beds from this room (I gifted it to my sister, Jenny) and used the extra space for the dresser and chest of drawers. I'm so glad we did! It's a great place to store some of our off-season clothing, too.

There's a pretty view of the woods along the side of our yard from this room. You can see the maple tree just starting to change into its fall color.

It is not a big room, but it feels a lot more spacious now. Our son, John, will be coming to visit this weekend, and he will be the first person to stay in the revamped guest room. I hope he likes it!

I'm currently working on this stitching project. I have stitched all of the seasons from this Lizzie Kate series...except for winter. It was time to get this one finished! When it is done, I think it will look perfect in the Rustic Cottage bedroom.

Thanks for visiting the cafe today!

  1. That plaid comforter is great! Your sons will love staying in this room, especially because you've made it so inviting. There are so many personal touches here - that's what I like - that items have a history or personal meaning.

  2. The room looks warm and cozy, a rest spot for busy travelers. Be sure to share your stitchery when it's complete. I also have my bedroom furniture given to me for my 16th birthday (52 years ago) and it also provides good storage.
