Getting More Mileage From Your Dies: A Slimline Tutorial

Today, I thought I'd show you a slimline card...with a twist!

Slimline cards have been all the rage for a while now. You can fit them in a standard business sized envelope. And for some stamp designs, it gives a longer "landscape" to build a scene or highlight the stamped images.

Here's the twist with today's card: I didn't use any slimline dies to make it.

I love slimline dies, and if you are looking for fast and easy, it's the way to go. But as with most dies these days, they can be pricey! $20-40 for some slimline die sets.

I decided to use some of my mat and frame dies to make some slimline card bases today.

For this card, I chose the frame from PTI's Mix and Mat Pinking. It measures the perfect width at about 3 1/2 inches across. It's the length that we will be adapting for the slimline base. Simply put the die on the cardstock, but leave about an inch off the cutting base. This will prevent it from cutting out the bottom. Run it through the machine, and this is what you will have:

As you can see, it is partially cut at this point. Next, you are going to flip so that the cut out end is at the bottom, and you are going to carefully put the die on the other end, overlapping slightly near the middle. This is really easy to line up with certain dies that have defined edges, like this one.

Run this through the machine, and you should end up with something like this:

Neato!

Here's a stack of ready-to-use slimline bases!

For this card, I used a bouquet of Oopsie Daisies from The Greetery. I LOVE this stamp set! It makes the sweetest flowers with very little effort.

I always think of Meg Ryan in You've Got Mail, when Tom Hanks' character brings her a bouquet of daisies. She asks "They're so friendly. Don't you think they are the friendliest flower?"

I do! And I hope the recipient of this card thinks so, too!

Do you use slimline dies?

  1. Unless you're going to make a lot of slimline cards, your idea is perfect. I've only made one slimline card, and I extended an embossing folder in the same way you did with the dies.

  2. I've made two or three but can't make myself purchase all the stuff for them. PFS gave away a slimline die last summer if you placed a $25 order because they were missing the stitch lines as designed. I like SSS's new smaller slimline 3 x 6.
