September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month

 

I cannot let September slide by without talking about Ovarian Cancer Awareness month.

Here in Michigan, MIOCA is a wonderful organization that raises funds for research and educates women and medical professionals on the signs, symptoms, and treatments for ovarian cancer.

To date, there is no screening to detect ovarian cancer. A PAP smear will not detect ovarian cancer. And because symptoms are often vague and dismissed, this cancer is frequently diagnosed in its late stages, when treatment options are limited.

It is the leading gynecological cancer, with over 22,000 cases diagnosed each year and over 14,000 reported deaths among women.

My sister, Tina, was sadly one of those statistics.
