How To Transform A Sad Basement Into A Family Fun Zone!

Good morning! I have a new room "update" to show you...the basement!

My family loves basements, which is odd because we didn't have basements for the first fifteen years of married life. Personally, I can take them or leave them. As a matter of fact, our Pittsburgh house only had a basement garage, and I was fine with that. But my husband and boys like a place where they can retreat, and I can see where a basement is a good place for that.

I saw a basement remodel last week from a blogger, and it was stunning. But when the blogger's husband saw the final product, he made the comment "This isn't a Man Cave Basement! This is a Pinterest basement!"

Warning: our basement is not a Pinterest basement!

It is, however, a family fun zone.

I wish I had some REALLY good "before" photos to show you of its formerly sad state. Remember when we started? It was the room that had (and still has) spray painted graffiti in the closet. 'Nuff said.  Beige walls, beige carpet, drop ceiling. And it still has all of those things, but they are no longer the overwhelming feature they once were.

We moved in our stuff, and there it sat.

I set up a craft space along the back wall, and I just did not like it there. Visually, it looked like a mess every time we came down to watch a movie.

So instead, I moved the craft area to the other side of the basement, where it has its own little niche, away from the family zone. And here is the family fun zone now:

I began to pull together some decor and artwork, and as I did, a sort of funky Americana theme began to take shape.

The foosball table is now in a much better place. This is where I school my boys with my mad skills.

A teepee in the basement! How fun is that? This teepee was a gift to Sam from our good friend, Lynn, many years ago. We still love it.

The boys want to build a six foot tower out of K'Nex? There's a space for that!

My husband wants to ride his road bike on the trainer? There's a space for that!

Someone feels compelled to assemble a LEGO soccer stadium? There's space for that!

I think the artwork really speaks to our family and our sense of adventure and love of the outdoors.

And did I mention our love of movies? We picked up some BILLY bookcases from IKEA last weekend, and they work great in the space.

The basement is partially finished, which means that many walls are just painted cinder block with a lot of electrical and mechanical exposed. The tricky part: how to camouflage the not so pretty things, like electrical boxes. Here's my solution:

I suspended these birch tree panels  from the drop ceiling, which hides the electrical box in the corner of the room.

These panels are made of lightweight foam board, which made them perfect for this purpose. (One of the perks of working in retail...visual props!)

So there you have it...a funky family fun zone. Not a Pinterest basement, but definitely better than where we started.

We still have more to do in the future. For starters, my husband really wants to get the entire basement drywalled. But whenever he says it, I just hear "$$$$!" I think we could use a fun rug to anchor the seating area, and some new lamps to improve the lighting. Those window wells can use some sort of curtains in the future. I'd really like to add a kitchen-style cabinet and counter top along the back wall where we can house the fridge, set up a microwave, and maybe store our board games.

For now, the family is really enjoying the space...mission accomplished!

Tomorrow, I will show you the other side of the basement...the Mary Rose's Cafe fun zone!

MIM# 236: A La Carte 2015

Happy Monday, cafe regulars! Today, I'm brewing up a fun entry in my bible journal, thanks to the Make It Monday challenge at Papertrey Ink.

The challenge? Choose one of the challenges from 2015! I've always wanted to doodle with stamps, as Ashley demonstrated in MIM #203.

For this page, I used my Rosie Posie stamps, and added a little watercoloring, a little doodling, and a little splattering.

At the tail end of 2014, God put this message on my heart. Our pastor gave the suggestion that we should pick a "doxology", a personal song of praise, and remember to sing it throughout the year. This verse from Luke, part of Mary's Magnificat, became my doxology. And if you know the song from Chris Tomlin, then you know the tune I sang throughout the year.

"He has done great things for me" became my reminder, even when things didn't look so great. When we had to say goodbye to our beloved dog, Maggie. When we had to leave our friends and beautiful house in Pittsburgh. When I had to leave a job I really loved. When the Fixer Upper house was bringing me down. I held on to the promise. He has done great things for me!

But guess what? As I reflected on 2015, I could see that He had, indeed, done great things for us. A big job promotion for Ed. A trip with the boys to Disney. A house sold, quickly, and for a profit. Our son, John's college graduation. John's new job and new apartment in Indianapolis. Home renovations and transformations. An awesome new church family.

Great things! Bike rides in our new community. Sam's new friends and musical achievements. Luke's awesome finish time in the 5K. Country Living Fair with my sister. Trips to downtown Chicago. A fun day at Cedar Point amusement park this summer. A wonderful Christmas filled with family and food and fun.

Great things! The Lights Before Christmas at the Toledo Zoo. Christkindl Market in Downtown Chicago. Breakfast ALL DAY at McDonalds! Star Wars!

He has done GREAT things for me in 2015. And I know He will keep this promise in 2016 as well.

Top Blog Posts of 2015

Happy New Year, cafe friends! Don't you just love Januarys? A month of clean slates, new starts, and fresh beginnings.

I have so much I want to share with you in 2016! But before I start, it only seems fitting that I take a brief glimpse in the rear view mirror at the year we are leaving behind.

So today, I thought I'd do a Mary Rose's Cafe Recap of the most popular posts of 2015.

What did cafe readers love? Here it is:

1.) Cafe readers LOVE planners!

Whew! I'm so glad you love them as much as I do! I have a lot of new planner love to share with you in 2016, too! Here are a few of the most popular posts:

2.) Cafe readers LOVE bible journaling!

Have you noticed how big this became in 2015? You cannot look at a flyer from your favorite Christian publishers or stores without seeing something about bible journaling in one of its many forms. I'm so excited to participate in Patter Cross' Glory Art challenge this year at her blog, Triple The Scraps. You can find more info, too, if you click on the badge on the right. Here are a few favorites from the cafe:

3.) Cafe readers LOVE blog hops!

Hands down, more visitors come to my cafe from Papertrey Ink than from any other stamp communities. The monthly blog hops and Make It Monday challenges are always a big draw. PTI's forums are filled with a great community of positive, upbeat, and encouraging crafters that get each other excited about every new product and project. Here are a few favorites from 2015:

4.) Cafe readers LOVE my crazy house!

Normally, if a business goes through a relocation, it suffers a little bit in its traffic. But not the cafe! I moved from Pittsburgh to Chicago, and you wonderful cafe regulars moved right along with me. It appears that you appreciate my fixer upper projects, which makes me so grateful as this is where I have been pouring a LOT of my energies in recent months. Exterior to interior, garden to kitchen, you've been following along as we transform this house one improvement at a time. Here were a few posts from our crazy adventure:

So, what will 2016 have in store for the cafe?

More servings of what you love! Challenges, bible journaling, planners, and house renovations for certain.

Where will it grow? Well, I need to incorporate more needle art this year, as it seemed to fall by the wayside in 2015. Something about packing all of my supplies (along with the rest of our worldly possessions) and moving must have stymied my hand crafted projects. Hoping to rectify that this year.

I'll be working in the garden once again this year, trying to design a way to make my back yard corner lot a little more private, while simultaneously obstructing the not-so-pretty views of neighbor pools and garbage cans.

More home projects to come! There are probably ten rooms on the "To Be Painted" list, along with projects like painting the kitchen cabinets and properly finishing the basement. It should be finished about five minutes before the For Sale sign goes up in the front yard. (At least that's always been our style in the past!)

Another hope for 2016: I'd like the cafe to branch out into a store. So look for an etsy shop in the future, where I will offer up hand crafted items along with some vintage flea market finds and crafting accessories.

It's a brand new day, cafe friends! Blessings on your 2016!

After-Christmas Cards

Would you believe that I am still  sending out Christmas cards? I had a few cards that needed more than just a signature, so I got those out this week. We had to write some letters to our friends back in Pittsburgh, with a note on each one saying "come and visit us in 2016!" We really do miss them all so much!

Here's one of the hand-watercolored cards I made using the tree from the PTI stamp set "Believe".

{Today's Brew: Believe stamp set (Papertrey Ink), sentiment from  Tag-Its, PTI Tiny Tags die, PTI Holiday Plaid paper, PTI card stock, watercolor paper, Kuretake Gansai Tambi watercolors, ribbon and baker's twine, Amuse Rhinestone star}

For this series of cards, I used the same template and swapped out the colors, papers, and stamped images.

Now that the Christmas cards are done, I can move on to the thank you cards. Maybe I can get those mailed out before Valentine's Day. Ha ha!

My craft room needs some serious attention this week! Time to clean and organize. We've been working on our basement and I'm hoping to show you some photos soon.

Blessings, cafe friends!

PTI December Blog Hop: Blessed!

Happy Boxing Day!

Today is the December blog hop at Papertrey Ink! I LOVE this inspiration photo! I think the plates and photo come from Pier One. Makes me want to go out and buy them if it weren't for the fact that I'm a.) broke from Christmas and b.) tired of malls and stores. Can I get an Amen?

So instead, I crafted a card that reminded me of these sweet plates!

I'm still having a mad crush on Rustic Wreath stamps and dies. Today, I cut out the wreath die in two shades of green. Then, I cut a slit in each wreath, which allowed me to carefully entwine the two colors. After that, I glued them both to this square of black card stock that I had inked up with some white ink on the edges.

{Today's Brew: Tiny Tags stamps and dies, Blessed die, Rustic Wreath die, PTI card stock, baker's twine, enamel dots}

This one word really sums up Christmas 2015 for me. Blessed! Blessed with a new church family, blessed with time spent with our families in Michigan and Ohio, blessed with fun and festive activities, blessed with good food and good health, blessed with a new home in a new town, blessed with time spent with our three sons together....

...and of course, blessed with all of you dear regulars at Mary Rose's Cafe! Thank you!

Christmas Cards Day Three

Merry Christmas Eve!

It's a very exciting time in our house today because SANTA! (said in my best Buddy the Elf voice)

This year, I decided to torture my youngest son, Sam, by putting presents under the tree a week early, rather than waiting until Christmas morning. Oh, the agony! Every day, he's shaking and squeezing and trying to guess what is inside every carefully wrapped box. I told him if he's not careful, he's going to really hurt that kitten I wrapped up for him! (Just kidding...no kittens were harmed in the making of this Christmas).

Today's card features Santa.

I don't traditionally do a lot of Santa in my Christmas because a.) it's all about Jesus and b.) my sons are older now and Santa has lost some of his magic. Also, we can no longer bribe them to be good with the threat that Santa's watching.

But this Santa image from the Papertrey Ink stamp set Believe is one of my favorites. It's such a simple, classic Santa. I've had this set for a while now (cough! cough! maybe two years, cough!) and have yet to color this Santa. So the other night, I stamped him with Memories ink on watercolor paper and I watercolored that Jolly Old Elf.

I thought the Rustic Wreath die made a great frame for Santa. I've been getting a lot of mileage out of two products: Mister Huey Calico spray and PTI's Holiday Plaid papers.

{Today's Brew: Believe Stamp set and dies (PTI), Rustic Wreath die (PTI), Tiny Tags die(PTI), sentiment from Tag Its (PTI), card stock and papers (PTI), Mister Huey Calico spray, baker's twine, watercolor paper, Kuretake Gansai Tambi watercolors}

I'm going to fill you in on a secret. I bought this set used, and the seller told me that it was missing the bird/dove stamp. So last month, I finally bought the dies that go with this set, and here's what I did. I cut out the bird die, used a Sharpie marker, and drew the dove onto the die. Voila!

Yesterday, I spent the afternoon addressing and fancifying my envelopes. Yes, I know it's Christmas Eve and I should have done this job say, around Thanksgiving. But here I am.  I love the washi tape! I'm just hoping that it doesn't unstick itself and get mangled in some post office machinery. I used washi from Simple Stories on the kraft envelopes. I'm going to smooth them all down with my bone folder and hope for the best.

Tonight is my favorite part of Christmas: church and candles and Silent Night. Somehow, in that wonderful spiritual moment, everything else gets washed away and we are right there in the stable with that Holy Family made holy because of Immanuel, God With Us.

Merry Christmas, cafe friends!

Christmas Cards Day Two

Winter Woods...they had me at the name alone! Although I have to say, if I was taking a walk in a winter woods today, it would be a soggy walk. Thunderstorms...two days before Christmas?! I'm really missing my snow.

This new stamp set from Papertrey Ink features three birds: cardinal, chickadee, and blue jay. I love them all!

I wanted to give this card a snowy effect, so I first sprayed with a white ink spray, and then followed with a Glimmer Mist sparkly spray.

For the pine needles, I used two different green inks. I've been using a LOT of papers from the Holiday Plaid collection, too. I think they really add a little something to each card.

{Today's Brew: Winter Woods stamp set (PTI), sentiment from Peace stamp set (PTI), PTI inks and card stock, Holiday Plaid papers (PTI), Mister Huey white calico spray, Glimmer Mists spray}

I hope you're having a warm peppermint mocha kind of day! Blessings!
